frayintermedia has been selected by donor-funded storytelling initiative Africa No Filter to manage narrative development, content production, and social media engagement for Project Kilimanjaro—a major media series examining Africa’s cotton industry.
The initiative aims to provide newsrooms, digital platforms, and publishers across the continent and internationally with high-quality, nuanced coverage of a sector that sits at the intersection of agriculture, industrial policy, fashion, and global trade.
Reframing the Cotton Narrative
Africa accounts for between 5% and 8% of global raw cotton production, yet much of the value addition happens elsewhere. Project Kilimanjaro explores the complexities, structural challenges, and untapped potential of Africa’s cotton value chain—from smallholder farmers and ginning mills to local textile manufacturing and export markets.
Benin, Mali, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, and Egypt rank among the continent’s largest producers, with Benin individually holding about 1% of total world production.
Over 90% of West African cotton is exported as raw lint (primarily to spinning mills in Bangladesh, Vietnam, China, and India).
Local domestic utilization across major West African producers averages under 2% to 5%.
The content will be syndicated and distributed via bird story agency, Africa’s premier wire-style news agency established by Africa No Filter. bird delivers multimedia, human-centered stories that counter harmful stereotypes about the continent, providing partner newsrooms across Africa and the global diaspora with rich editorial material.
