Empowering African media advocates
The Wits University Link Centre wanted to remember and further the work of late media policy activist Jeanette Minnie through training Africans to likewise impact media policy on the continent.
This is especially necessary now as many governments are working to restrict journalists’ ability to hold the powerful to account.
To support media and civil society, frayintermedia partnered with the Wits’s Link Centre to draw on Jeanette’s legacy with a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) to empower actors in the African media landscape.
frayintermedia designed the curriculum, produced the case studies, and worked with media policy experts to ensure quality of course materials. frayintermedia also marketed the course to African audiences, through social media and digital marketing.
The course was hosted on the EdX e-Learning platform, and participation was global, but unusually for a EdX MOOC, showed outstanding African participation. In total, almost 700 learners from 70 countries participated, giving overwhelmingly positive feedback.
